Fall blew in this week! And the harvests are soon to follow

This weather has us dancing in the fields as we plant, weed, fertilize, and prepare for your CSA harvests to begin soon. We’ve been waiting and waiting for cooler temperatures, and our garden is so thankful they’ve finally arrived.

When the hot and dry conditions of summer stick around into early fall like they did this year, it is just impossible to get seeds to germinate (they literally just cook in 100+ degree soil), and tender young transplants struggle to grow.   We’ve now got arugula, radishes, turnips, spinach, and a whole host of other direct-seed crops in the ground. And our transplanted crops of broccoli, kale, head lettuce, and the like are happy as can be.

It won’t be long and our fall CSA harvests will begin! We predict 2 more weeks (that’d be Oct. 24th) now that it’s cooled down a bit and the crops are really happy.

What we need now is for the sun to keep on shining! Last fall we had so many cloudy days the plants basically stopped growing in November and we had to cut the fall CSA off short.  With this year’s never-ending summer, the CSA is starting pretty late, so we don’t want to have to do that again. So keep your fingers crossed for lots of sunshine, and pleasant temperatures. What we’re getting right now is simply PERFECT.

In celebration of the weather, we made a sausage, kale, potato soup last night, and later this week we’re making stuffed acorn squash with wild rice, kale, pumpkin seeds, parmesan, and fresh herbs.  Both of which should be regular menu items in your rotation when the harvests begin soon.

If you haven’t joined the fall CSA yet, there is still time, and we need 10 more members! Sign up below or spread the word to friends and neighbors to help us fill.
