2014 Summer share #6
Share Notes:
- Cherry Tomatoes—Sungolds! These are the sweetest cherry EVER! We may not ever bother growing other varieties. These are hearty, sweet, prolific, and such a pretty color.
- Cucumbers—These are as crisp and fresh as ever! This week try them in a super simple batch of fridge pickles.
- Yellow squash—a little straight neck and a little crook neck.
- Potatoes—a small harvest of lovely russets! Our potatoes weren’t too prolific this year so just a few for everyone, but they’re wonderful! I hope you enjoy them.
- Pattypan squash—I like to slice these into thick rounds and grill them. They are also fabulous stuffed with seasoned meat, peppers, onion, and a little cheese.
- Basil—Genovese. Plenty for pesto! To store fresh for up to 2 weeks, place the sprigs in a glass of water on the counter (Not in the fridge! Basil can’t tolerate below 50 degrees) and change the water daily.
- Eggplant—Large shares received our long slender Japanese varieties. Small shares received the lovely Italian Black Beauty. I cooked up a pretty tasty Thai green curry with the Japanese eggplant this week. Check the blog soon and I’ll have a recipe up for you!
- Tomatoes—More of these glorious beauties! Very soon we will have heirlooms for you. A few are ripening on the vine this week, and we are hoping that we will have a few hundred ready by next week. Refrigeration below 50 degrees causes tomatoes to become mealy, so store them on the counter.
Wash your vegetables just before using them to improve shelf-life.
